Spoon and Dish

by James B. Nicola

Should you have laughed so at the cruel sport?

Should I have overleapt the horny moon?

And what about the other dish and spoon,
the ones abandoned that night (on a shelf
and in a drawer, respectively) to sort
the mess out and go on with damaged lives?

Does what they did remind you of yourself?

At first they dated other dishes, knives
and forks, but, while attractive in their shine,
these tended to lie, slice, or even pierce.

In time, though, Spoon and Dish met, became friends,
and grew to trust each other with a fine
and lasting love.

                          Their exes, playing fierce
and fast, twice more divorced, met violent ends.
