Stray
By George L. Chieffet

You slipped through the trap

I set with a straw basket

and a single pole—

I put out bait cheese

as you fled the house

and I came around the north side

and surprised you as you slunk away.

The slouch you had, a slow tease

no one could make you flee.

How many scorching days

I calculated and waited

each time dusk caught the farm

battered sheds dashed out in the open

standing like shameless contrarians.

You would twitch and sniff the scent of human hair

pursue the shadow that pursued you.

No human could touch you out there

No man could staunch the hunger.
