Buick imported Opels in 1972 when I was in grad school and my dad paid $2,772 for my beautiful blue Manta that I took to Ohio where it got pelletted by hail during a tornado and I drove through a Nationwide drive-thru and got an instant check which I used to live on while I drove my dimpled baby for ten more years and my dad never asked to be paid back but I gave back years of grace instead and would do it again and again because that's what good sons do when Buick gives up Opels and you can't get parts even if you find a mechanic who'd replace them for you so I buy a Jetta, another German make, this one assembled in Mexico that my father never saw except from a distance one always thought was vast but find out later is only inches away and I discovered he took it for a drive one night because I found it facing in the opposite direction next morning, keys above the visor, tank empty.
