The Gods We Were
By Naomi Ruth Lowinsky

Once you were a god     I remember
such delight
in your eyes     in your laugh

in your hands that knew how
to release me
into the wild

in every world we traveled
tropical island     redwood grove
river flow over the falls

I was your goddess
with radiant breasts
You were my stallion
                                  with wings     remember?

* * *

Now that you’re human     and so am I
with backs that ache
and weary feet     we meet

after separate days     at twilight
You’ve roasted a chicken
with tarragon and thyme

I slice a persimmon
you picked from our tree
to toss in a salad

We decide which wine

These days the gods
are our children’s children
We worship them

but what is most holy is this
slow domestic dance
this wistfulness of ending days

What remains in the gathering dark
this gift from the gods
we used to be     such delight
                                               in your eyes     remember?
